WPT Russia kicks off at Casino Sochi

₽95.5M ($1.6M) GTD Main Event headlines packed schedule

The World Poker Tour (WPT) returned to Casino Sochi, Sunday, January 12, 2020, to kick off the highly-anticipated 2020 edition of WPT Russia.

Running up until Sunday, January 26, 2020, the partypoker LIVE sponsored festival features a total of nine events to suit all bankrolls, headlined by the ₽95,500,000 ($1,600,000) GTD Main Event at a ₽192,500 ($3,100) +17,500 ($280) buy-in, while the ₽301,000 ($4,900) + 21,000 ($340) High Roller is sure to attract the region’s best players to the Olympic city this month.

Other highlights include an opening and closing event, plus a dedicated Ladies and PLO bounty tournament.

Nestled in the mountain resort of Gorky Gorod, Casino Sochi is a world class international poker destination and the venue holds special memories for Team partypoker’s Anatoly Filatov. The Russian followed up a partypoker LIVE MILLIONS Main Event win there in August 2018 worth ₽60,000,000 ($944,230) with victory in the WPT Russia High Roller last year to add a further ₽6,987,610 ($105,906) to his coffers – kicking of a stunning 12 months at the felt.

Filatov will be back looking to capture more glory on home soil shortly. He said: “I am very excited to combine poker and skiing once more in Sochi and I’m looking forward to defending my title!

“Last year I started the year with a win in a High Roller event and it was a great time!”

A recent concept introduced by partypoker partner Rob Yong allows players to enter either Online or Live Day 1 and Day 2 flights for the WPT Russia Main Event. All players that successfully make it through to Day 3 from either route will then combine pools to play down to a winner at the host venue from 13:00 on Saturday, January 25th, having already locked up a min-cash.

Players can secure their Main Event seats with T$ from just $1.10 via satellites running on partypoker, making the event accessible for all.

In addition, partypoker is giving players the chance to book their seat in Sochi for free, with the operator’s ‘Way to the TV Table’ promotion. Any player that takes part in three separate ₽21,000 buy-in WPT Russia Main Event online satellites will earn a ticket to an exclusive freeroll. Here the winner will receive Main Event entry from Day 2 of the tournament, where they will be seated at the TV table and broadcast live to viewers across the world.

Hermance Blum, WPT Vice-President Europe, said: “WPT is very proud to count Casino Sochi as a key partner in the tour’s global expansion.

“Players, as well as WPT CEO, Adam Pliska, are excited to come back to this beautiful region and one of a kind resort. After such a successful inaugural event last year, everyone involved is happy to build strong momentum for WPT Russia in the coming years.”
