A new study by resume builder CVMaker has revealed that the gambling and betting activities sector experienced the highest employment growth in the UK from 2023 to 2024, with employee numbers rising from 44,000 to 58,000.
The research examined employee counts across 80 different job sectors using data from the Office for National Statistics.
The statistics show that gambling and betting activities saw a 31.82% increase in workforce size, the highest growth rate across all job sectors.
The travel agency and tour operator sector was second with a 29.09% growth in workforce, with employee numbers climbing from 55,000 to 71,000.
Water collection, treatment and supply ranked third with a 21.31% increase, while remediation activities and waste management saw the fourth-highest growth at 20.00%.
The manufacture of other transport equipment completed the top five with a 19.79% increase, adding 38,000 jobs as the workforce expanded from 192,000 to 230,000 employees.
Activities of head offices and management consultancy came next with 13.76%, the sports activities and amusement sector grew by 13.47%, and the manufacture of beverages recorded a 10.42% increase.
Financial service activities (excluding insurance) ranked ninth with an 8.92% increase, adding 51,000 jobs as the sector grew from 572,000 to 623,000 employees.
Rounding out the top ten, insurance, reinsurance and pension funding saw an 8.82% increase, with employment rising from 102,000 to 111,000 over 12 months.
Nicky Klaasse, CEO of CVMaker, commented on the findings, “These figures show the substantial changes occurring in the UK job market. The strong growth in gambling and betting activities stands out, with nearly 32% more employees in just one year.
“We’re seeing traditional manufacturing sectors continuing to contract, while service industries and specialised fields are expanding. For people working in declining sectors, now might be the time to consider how transferable skills could open doors to growth industries.
