Sweden grants 116 licences in less than three months

The gambling regulator has revealed the number of licences granted so far in 2019, most of them being for online games.

Spelinspektionen, Sweden’s gambling regulator, revealed on Monday that it has granted 116 licences as of March 11th, with most of them have been issued for online gaming.

Sweden launched its newly-regulated gambling market on January 1st and introduced major changes for the local industry, including the rebrand of the local regulator and the introduction of new iGaming companies.

44 licences have been granted for commercial betting, such as sports betting and betting on horses. The five licences granted for land-based commercial games include, for example, a casino at a restaurant.

The number of licensees was 72, meaning that several licence-holders have more than one licence for different operations in Sweden.
