Bingo has been a beloved pastime in the UK for over a century, and its popularity shows no signs of slowing down.

And the online search data also backs this up, with around 42,000 internet queries for the term ‘bingo’ in the UK every month. Whether played in casinos, dedicated halls, or local community venues – bingo can offer a social connection that many feel is missing in modern life.

So to celebrate National Bingo Day today (June 27th), Gambling.com set out to find the UK’s most bingo-mad places. To do this, they analysed Google Trends search volume data from the past year for the term “bingo” and the five other top bingo-related phrases across the country.

  • West Midlands town Tipton is the UK’s most bingo-mad place. Across all six analysed phrases it recorded the study’s highest combined score.
  • Lincolnshire village Burton upon Stather is the runner-up (#2) in the nationwide ranking, with Tyne and Wear town South Shields (#3) taking the final place on the podium.
  • County Durham and Northumberland towns Hartlepool and Blyth are in #4 and #5, respectively.
  • The Top 20 is dominated by locations that are part of the Midlands, North of England or Scotland – with Essex village Mistley in #25 the first place that could be considered a part of the South of England.
  • The counties with the most representatives in the bingo-mad Top 20 are County Durham and Tyne and Wear, with three apiece. Northumberland, Lincolnshire, West Yorkshire, North Yorkshire and Lancashire also have two inclusions each.

Google Trends assigns each location a relative score from 0 to 100, based on search volume relative to population size (per capita). The scores for all six terms were then added to determine each location’s ‘Combined Google Trend Score’ and subsequent final ranking – revealing where bingo fever is highest in the UK.

After all the markers have run dry, West Midlands town Tipton is the UK’s most bingo-mad place. Across all six analysed phrases it recorded a Combined Google Trend Score of 330, including the nation’s second highest relative search volume for the phrase ‘bingo’.

Burton upon Stather, and its final cumulative score of 324, is the runner-up (#2) in the study. Despite having a population of less than 3,000, the residents of this North Lincolnshire village seem to have a real passion for bingo – at least according to its online searches.

Tyneside town South Shields (#3) takes the final place on the podium, with a score of 314. Despite not topping the national charts in any of the six analysed phrases, the coastal town does register a score in each one, showing a strong level of interest across the bingo board.

The County Durham and Northumberland towns of Hartlepool and Blyth are in #4 and #5, respectively.

The Top 20 is dominated by locations that are part of the Midlands, North of England, or Scotland – with Essex village Mistley in #25 the first place that could be considered a part of the South of England.

The counties with the most representatives in the bingo-mad Top 20 are County Durham and Tyne and Wear, with three apiece. Northumberland, Lincolnshire, West Yorkshire, North Yorkshire and Lancashire also have two inclusions each.
